NEW JERSEY POLITICIANS GO HOLLYWOOD

While explaining New Jersey's dire financial situation to the state's mayors at a recent conference, New Jersey Governor Chris Christie said it is time for the chronically cash-strapped state to take bold steps. He drew a Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid analaogy. Christie said, "It's like that seminal moment when Butch and Sundance were on the cliff and they had two choices: get shot in the back or jump off the cliff into the river and take their chances."

Christie asked the mayors and the state lawmakers in attendence to take his hand like Butch did with Sundance and jump off the cliff. Essentially he was trying to ask the politicians to start setting courageous policies even if they're risky.

After Christie left, Assemblyman Lou Geenwald picked up on the Butch and Sundance theme. He said, "If I remember correctly, they died after they jumped off of that cliff." While that's technically right, they did not die BECAUSE they jumped off the cliff.

State Senator Tom Kean then said, "They didn't die as a result of jumping off the cliff. They survived that. They died because they were shot trying to rob one too many banks. Let's stop robbing banks." In his defense, there's no evidence that Kean or any other sitting New Jersey lawmaker ever actually robbed a bank. I'm pretty sure he was just trying to make a point.

At the same conference, State Senator Kevin O'Toole kept the Hollywood ball rolling. While describing the tough job legislators will have trying to balance next year's budget with an $11 billion deficit he said, "It's like the Godfather. This is the life we've chosen."

If you want to see a real movie based on New Jersey politics, keep your eyes out for "The Soprano State" the movie based on The New York Times' Best Seller, "The Soprano State" by Bob Ingle and Sandy McClure. It is currently in production. Although I'm referenced in the book a few times I'm sure my part will end up on the cutting room floor. That's how my luck goes.
