CAN YOU LIVE WITHOUT THE WORLD SERIES?

Cablevision and News Corporation executives are engaged in an ongoing retransmission contract dispute. If the battle isn’t resolved before the October 15, 2010 deadline, thousands of cable customers from losing access to much-watched television stations.

If the dispute is not resolved by tomorrow, Cablevision customers may lose access to WNYW (NY channel 5), WWOR (NY channel 9) and WTXF (Philadelphia channel 29). In the interest of full disclosure, I’m not a cablevision customer, but many of my neighbors are. If the fight isn’t settled, a lot of those neighbors will want to come to my house to watch what I’m going to be watching, namely the New York Giants on NY channel 5 and hopefully the New York Yankees in the World Series.

It’s not that I don’t like my neighbors, it’s just that I don’t want them crowding up my living room and talking while I’m fanatically trying to root on my teams.

Two state lawmakers are now weighing in. Assembly members Linda Greenstein and Wayne DeAngelo are urging the two sides to hammer out a deal. Hamilton Township, New Jersey -- the largest town in Greenstein and DeAngelo’s 14thLegislative District – is largely serviced by Cablevision.

“We are concerned that these customers are going to loose access to WNYW which will air the pending Major League Baseball National League Championship Series, NFL games (including the New York Giants), and eventually the World Series Championship. For many households living on tight budgets, their cable television programming is the most cost effective way for them to follow their favorite sports teams,” wrote Greenstein and DeAngelo in a letter to Cablevision and News Corporations chief executive officers.
