TO PLACE A CALL PLEASE HANG UP AND DIAL AGAIN

Can you picture this? A state worker is sitting in an office in Trenton, New Jersey when a citizen comes in with a question, complaint or request. The state worker wants to look important so he picks up the phone and barks orders, throws huge figures around and makes giant commitments. He finally hangs up and asks the citizen, "Can I help you?" The guy answers, "Yes. I'm hear to activate your phone lines."

That may not have actually happened, but then again maybe it has. Today State Comptroller Matt Boxer released a report showing one out of every six state government phone lines should be disconnected because nobody is using them. More than 19,000 phone lines were being paid for with taxpayer dollars, but the numbers weren't assigned to anybody and nobdoy was using them.

The phones line have been suspended or disconnected and Boxer says it will save the state $3.2 million a year.

In one case, the report finds the state was paying for a cell phone for a former employee for almost six years after she resigned.
