PROPERTY TAX RELIEF....THIS TIME NO KIDDING?

In the summer of 2006 then-Governor Jon Corzine called for a special legislative session to deal with New Jersey's highest-in-the-nation property taxes. Four bi-partisan, bi-cameral committees were set up to attack the problem from four different areas. Over 100 bills were produced but many of them took years to become law. Some still haven't become law.

Last week, Governor Chris Christie called for a special session that lasted for three days and did not include most Democratic lawmakers who simply didn't think Christie had the authority to call them into session. A tentative deal was reached anyway to impose a 2% cap on property taxes and the Governor now wants the State Senate and General Assembly to begin considering his 33-bill property tax cutting "tool kit."

Typically, the legislature disappears from Trenton right after the budget is signed into law, but this summer they'll actually be at work at least trying to lower property taxes.
